KZN Riots: The great rebuild

The July unrest which swept through KZN, and parts of Gauteng, cost the South African economy billions of Rands, with over 200 shopping centres looted and property destruction estimated to total R15 billion Rand.

According to reports, over 40 000 businesses were burnt, vandalized, and/or looted during the four days the political unrest swept through cities and rural towns in KZN.

For many businesses, the task of rebuilding is a mammoth one, with many business owners feeling overwhelmed, so says CEO of Profile Construction, Garth Ware.

"The psychological aspects of having a property totally destroyed by the looting is a very difficult experience for many business and property owners. Many are not eager to rebuild because they believe the task too great," explains Ware.
